Portrait Society Gallery is excited to present Magic Mud, a group ceramic exhibition in collaboration with Project Onward, Chicago.
Project Onward is one of the midwest’s largest facilitated art studios for disabled artists. In recent years, they have enlarged their ceramic program to meet the needs and desires of more artists. The exhibition includes work by Ruby Bradford whose fascination with cats has lead to a series of animated sculptures; John Behnke who sculpts detailed, elaborate bird forms; Alita Van Hee who adds writing to the surfaces of abstracted totemic sculptures, as well as work by Cherylle Booker, Shandrewick Key, Molly McGrath, Kayla Jeane, and Adam Hines.
The exhibition will also include regional, contemporary ceramic artists working across many styles from functional pottery to sculptural works. Artists include Holly Berg, Kota Bowen, Santiago Cucullu, Brit Krohmer, Jeff Ganger, Janelle Gramling, Kate Salas, Lulu Sanchez, Meghan Sullivan, Jackie Shatz, Diego Sosa, and Michael Ware.

In addition, Portrait Society is partnering with the Milwaukee-based theatre company Pink Umbrella for a special presentation, “Magic Mud Out Loud,” on November 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. Members of the theater company selected works of art by Project Onward artists and responded by writing poems or commentary. They will perform their responses at this event. The event is free but space is limited. Please register here
Magic Mud is the gallery’s first focus on ceramics in nearly seven years. Several thematic groupings will underscore aspects of just how magic mud can be. One wall will present minimalist, contemplative works that emphasize simplicity, quietude, and presence. A large table will host eight different table settings by an assortment of artists, situated amid several wall-scaled installations.
