Skully Gustafson, aka Skully Skyrocket, makes work that draws from human environments. Found objects and materials are sculpted together, painted, collaged and pasted on the floors, walls, and ceilings to create space that is foreign to the viewer and to remove oneself from the familiar. Process is an important aspect of the work in that it changes quickly and intuitively, as well as the documentation through photographs. Skully is an art medium himself who is transformed through costume and body painting then photographed into his installations. The work is positive in that it is pure devotion to the essence of art and creation. The work rebels against stale identity and performs brutalist expressions in regards to the here and now.
Skully lives and works in Milwaukee, WI. In 2012 he received his BFA in Integrated StudioArts from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design as well as studied for a semester in Brooklyn, NY at the New York Studio Residency Program in 2011. He has shown work in group exhibitions around Milwaukee, WI and in Brooklyn, NY. He is a current artist in residence at RedLine Milwaukee, a 501( c )(3) charitable organization.
